Breakfast Ideas for Toddlers & 1 Year Olds

A good toddler breakfast has three parts: a protein (egg, yogurt, nut butter), a fiber-rich grain (oats, whole-grain bread) and a fruit or vegetable. These recipes cover busy weekdays and slow weekends, and many of them freeze, so breakfast can be ready in the time it takes to warm a pancake.

Breakfast Ideas for Toddlers & 1 Year Olds

Quick answer

  • Build each breakfast from protein + whole grain + fruit or veg, such as egg muffin bites with toast and berries.
  • Iron matters: oats, eggs and iron-fortified cereal are easy iron sources at breakfast; serve them with fruit for vitamin C.
  • Pancakes, muffins and egg bites freeze for 2–3 months; reheat until hot, then cool before serving.
  • No added sugar is needed. Ripe banana, pear and pumpkin sweeten naturally, and honey stays off the menu until 12 months.

Pancakes & French toast

Soft, easy to hold and perfect for batch cooking. Cut into strips from 7–8 months.

Egg breakfasts

Eggs are a quick, protein-rich breakfast. Always cook until no liquid egg remains.

Oatmeal, porridge & overnight oats

Warm bowls for spoon practice. Thin with breast milk, formula or (from 12 months) whole milk.

Grab-and-go breakfasts

For daycare drop-offs and car rides. Pair with a cup of milk.

How to build a toddler breakfast

Three parts, plus a drink. Mix and match the recipes above.

  • egg1. A protein: egg, yogurt, cottage cheese or thinly spread nut butter.
  • grain2. A whole grain: oatmeal, whole-grain toast, oat pancakes or an iron-fortified cereal.
  • nutrition3. A fruit or vegetable: soft or cooked, cut small; vitamin C helps absorb iron.
  • water_drop4. A drink: whole milk (12–24 months) or water in an open or straw cup. No juice needed.

What should a 1 year old eat for breakfast?

The same foods as the rest of the family, cut small and soft. A typical 1-year-old breakfast is 2–4 tablespoons of each food: a few strips of pancake or half an egg, some fruit, and a cup of whole milk.

Appetite swings day to day. Offer, then let your toddler decide how much to eat.

Safety reminders

  • Cut round foods (grapes, cherry tomatoes, blueberries) into quarters lengthwise until age 4, and skip whole nuts, popcorn, hard raw vegetables and chunks of raw apple.
  • Keep your child seated and supervised whenever they eat, including snacks in the car or stroller.
  • Cook eggs until no runny white or yolk remains, and skip honey (including in baked goods) before 12 months.
  • These recipes are general guidance for healthy, full-term babies and children. Ask your pediatrician first if your child was born early, has a medical condition, allergies or feeding difficulties (medical disclaimer).
FAQ

Toddler breakfast ideas: questions parents ask

What is a good breakfast for a 1 year old?expand_more

Pair a protein, a whole grain and a fruit: for example, soft banana oat pancakes with yogurt, scrambled egg with toast fingers and berries, or oatmeal with pear and a swirl of nut butter.

How much should a toddler eat for breakfast?expand_more

Less than most parents expect: roughly 2–4 tablespoons of each food, or about a quarter of an adult portion. Let your toddler's hunger guide the amount.

Can I make toddler breakfasts ahead of time?expand_more

Yes. Pancakes, muffins, egg bites and banana bread freeze well for 2–3 months. Freeze them in a single layer, bag them, and reheat until hot through before cooling to serve.

Should toddlers drink juice at breakfast?expand_more

It isn't needed. Offer whole milk or water. The AAP recommends no juice before age 1 and at most 4 oz of 100% juice a day for ages 1–3, served in a cup with a meal.
