Prematurity, a medical condition, feeding difficulties or allergies change the advice.

Trouble breathing or signs of a severe reaction can’t wait. Call right away.
Who our content is for
Every food guide, cutting guide, recipe, feeding schedule, allergen plan and free tool on Bite100 is written for healthy babies and children who were born at term (37 weeks or later), are growing and developing as expected, and have no known medical condition.
Ages, textures, portion sizes and schedules are typical ranges for that group. Every child is different, and your pediatrician’s advice for your child always comes first.
Talk to a professional first if your child
Check with your pediatrician, a registered dietitian, or a feeding therapist before following our guidance if your child:
- was born premature (before 37 weeks) or with a low birth weight. Use the age your pediatrician recommends, which may be corrected age;
- has a diagnosed medical condition, for example a heart, kidney, metabolic or digestive condition, or reflux that needs treatment;
- has trouble sucking, chewing or swallowing, often coughs or gags hard while eating, or has an oral or airway difference such as a cleft palate;
- has a developmental delay, low muscle tone, or a neurological or genetic condition that affects feeding;
- has a known food allergy, severe eczema, or has had an allergic reaction to a food before;
- is not gaining weight as expected, or your pediatrician is monitoring their growth;
- follows a prescribed diet, such as thickened feeds, tube feeding, or a special formula.
For breastfeeding questions, a lactation consultant (IBCLC) can help.
Educational, not medical advice
Bite100 content is general education. It is reviewed by our dietitians and based on published guidance from bodies such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the CDC, the WHO and NIAID. But it is not medical advice, it doesn’t create a clinician-patient relationship, and it can’t take your child’s history into account.
Never delay or ignore advice from your child’s doctor because of something you read on Bite100.
Allergens
Introducing common allergens early and keeping them in the diet is recommended for most babies. Babies with severe eczema, an egg allergy, or both have a higher risk of peanut allergy. Their pediatrician may want to evaluate them or plan the first taste together. Ask before you start.
Choking, CPR and emergencies
Any food can be a choking hazard. Seat your child upright, stay with them while they eat, and serve food in a size and texture that suits their stage.
Our choking and CPR guides are a refresher, not a substitute for hands-on training. We recommend an infant and child CPR course, such as those offered by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number right away. Examples include choking, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or lips, widespread hives, repeated vomiting, or a child who is pale, floppy or unusually sleepy.
Free tools and trackers
Our calculators, schedule builder, allergen planner and breastfeeding tracker are organising tools. They give typical ranges and keep track of what you enter. They don’t diagnose anything, and their results are not a prescription. Bring your concerns, and the summaries if they help, to your pediatrician.
