When can babies have yuzu?
Can babies have yuzu?
Babies can have yuzu from about 6 months, as a squeeze of juice or a little finely grated zest mixed into food. Yuzu is a fragrant, very sour Japanese citrus that is mostly seeds and juice, so it is used as a flavoring rather than eaten in segments. Skip yuzu drinks and sweetened yuzu tea for babies.
How to serve yuzu by age
Shapes and textures change as your baby’s grasp and chewing grow.

6 months
Remove all seeds, then stir a few drops of fresh yuzu juice into smooth foods like mashed avocado, blended fish, vegetable puree or rice porridge, or mix a tiny amount of finely grated zest into plain yogurt. Offer it on a spoon.

7–8 months
Keep using a few drops of yuzu juice or a little finely grated zest to season lumpier foods like fork-mashed avocado, flaked fish, steamed vegetables or thicker rice porridge. Never offer segments or seeds.

9–12 months
Keep using yuzu juice and zest to season family foods like salmon, tofu, noodles and roasted vegetables. Its strong flavor means a little goes a long way.

12 months +
Toddlers can enjoy yuzu juice in dressings and marinades and grated zest in baked goods. Yuzu segments are mostly seeds and pith, so keep using juice or zest instead.
Why it’s good
Yuzu gives babies vitamin C and aromatic compounds that add bright flavor, though only in small amounts since it is used as a seasoning. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron from plant foods like beans, tofu and fortified cereal. Yuzu can help babies enjoy food with less salt.
Safety notes
- Yuzu is full of large seeds. Remove all seeds before squeezing juice over food, and do not offer whole segments.
- Do not give yuzu juice as a drink before 12 months. Use it only as a few drops of flavoring.
- Yuzu tea (yuja-cha) and yuzu marmalade are made with a lot of sugar or honey. Avoid yuja-cha made with honey before 12 months and keep sugary versions until after age 2.
- Ponzu and yuzu kosho are very salty, and yuzu kosho contains chili. Skip them for babies and use tiny amounts for toddlers.
- Acidic citrus can cause a red rash around the mouth or a diaper rash. This is usually irritation, not allergy.
A low-allergy food, still worth watching
Yuzu is not a common allergen, though citrus allergy can occur. Start with a few drops and watch for hives, swelling or vomiting; mild redness where juice touches the skin is usually irritation.
