When can babies have vegetable stock?
Can babies have vegetable stock?
Babies can have vegetable stock from about 6 months when it is homemade without salt or labeled unsalted or no salt added. Regular store-bought stock and bouillon cubes are very high in sodium. Use vegetable stock to cook grains, thin purees or make soups.
How to serve vegetable stock by age
Shapes and textures change as your baby’s grasp and chewing grow.

6 months
Use unsalted vegetable stock to thin smooth vegetable purees or to cook rice, quinoa or lentils that you then blend smooth. Use unsalted stock only as a cooking liquid at this age; offer small sips of plain water in an open cup with meals.

7–8 months
Cook rice, lentils, small pasta or vegetables in unsalted stock and mash them into thicker, lumpier textures. Cooled stock can also moisten minced meat or fish so it is easier to swallow.

9–12 months
Make soft vegetable soups, risotto or stews with unsalted stock and finely chopped or mashed vegetables. Let soups cool and offer them on a preloaded spoon or in a cup.

12 months +
Toddlers can have soups and stews made with low-sodium vegetable stock. Keep checking labels, as even reduced-sodium stocks can be salty.
Why it’s good
Homemade vegetable stock adds flavor and small amounts of potassium and other minerals that leach from vegetables. It is mostly a cooking liquid, so its main value is helping babies enjoy grains, legumes and vegetables without added salt.
Safety notes
- Most store-bought stock, broth and bouillon is very high in sodium. Choose unsalted or no-salt-added stock, or make your own.
- Check labels for allergens. Some stocks and bouillon cubes contain wheat, soy, celery or dairy.
- Cool hot stock and soups before serving, and test the temperature yourself.
- Refrigerate homemade stock within 2 hours, use it within 3 to 4 days, or freeze it in ice cube trays for small portions.
- Avoid stocks with added MSG, onion and garlic powders in large amounts, or added sugar.
A low-allergy food, still worth watching
Vegetable stock is not a common allergen on its own, but some brands contain wheat, soy, celery or milk. Read the label, and make your own stock if your baby has food allergies.
