When can babies have carob?
Can babies have carob?
Babies can have carob powder from 6 months mixed into foods like yogurt, oatmeal and baked goods. Carob has a naturally sweet, chocolate-like flavor and is free of caffeine. Carob chips and hard carob bars are a choking risk and often contain added sugar, so save them for older toddlers.
How to serve carob by age
Shapes and textures change as your baby’s grasp and chewing grow.

6 months
Stir about 1/2 teaspoon of unsweetened carob powder into smooth foods like plain yogurt, oatmeal, mashed banana or a blended chia pudding, and offer it on a spoon or a preloaded spoon.

7–8 months
Keep stirring carob powder into thicker oatmeal, yogurt or lumpy banana mash. You can also bake it into soft homemade baby muffins or pancakes, in place of some of the flour, and offer soft pieces that squash easily.

9–12 months
Offer carob in soft finger foods, such as carob banana pancakes, baked oatmeal squares or soft muffin pieces. Keep carob chips and carob-coated snacks off the menu for now.

12 months +
Toddlers can have carob in smoothies, energy bites made without whole nuts, and baked goods. If you use carob chips, melt them into batter or chop them very finely, and read labels for added sugar.
Why it’s good
Carob powder contains fiber, calcium and potassium, along with small amounts of other minerals and plant compounds. Carob is naturally sweet, so it can flavor foods without added sugar, and it has almost no fat and no caffeine. Carob is a flavoring, not a main source of nutrients, so offer it alongside nourishing foods.
Safety notes
- Carob chips and hard carob bars can block a small airway. Melt or bake them into soft foods, or chop them very finely for toddlers.
- Many carob snacks, chips and drinks contain added sugar, milk powder or palm oil. Choose plain, unsweetened carob powder for babies.
- Carob powder is high in fiber. Start with a small amount, since large portions can firm up or loosen stools in some babies.
- Raw carob pods are hard and woody, with very hard seeds. Do not let babies or toddlers chew on whole pods.
- Do not add carob or thickeners to a baby's bottle unless your pediatrician recommends it.
A low-allergy food, still worth watching
Carob is not a common allergen, though rare reactions have been reported. Carob is a legume, and a few children with peanut or other legume allergies may react, so introduce it in a small amount and watch for hives, swelling or vomiting; check carob products for milk, nuts or soy.
Carob for babies: questions parents ask
Quick answers about carob for babies and toddlers.
When can babies have carob?
Babies can have carob from 6 months, once they are ready for solids. Unsweetened carob powder mixed into yogurt, oatmeal or baked goods is the best form for babies.

Yes, babies can eat carob in small amounts, and carob is a popular caffeine-free alternative to chocolate. Choose plain carob powder without added sugar.
Is carob a choking hazard for babies?
Carob powder is a low choking risk when mixed into food, but carob chips, bars and whole pods are a choking hazard for babies and toddlers. Melting or baking carob into soft foods keeps it safe.
Is carob a common allergen?
Carob is not a common allergen and is not one of the Top 9 food allergens. Carob is a legume, so rare reactions can happen, particularly in children with legume allergies.
How do I serve carob to a 6 month old?
To serve carob to a 6 month old, stir about half a teaspoon of unsweetened carob powder into plain yogurt, oatmeal or mashed banana and offer it on a spoon. Soft carob muffins or pancakes can follow at 7–8 months.
Is carob the same as cocoa?
Carob is not the same as cocoa. Carob comes from the pod of the carob tree, is naturally sweet and has no caffeine, while cocoa comes from cacao beans, is bitter and contains caffeine and theobromine.
Can babies have carob bean gum in formula?
Carob bean gum, also called locust bean gum, is used to thicken some formulas made for reflux. Carob bean gum is considered safe in approved infant formulas, but only use thickened formulas if your pediatrician suggests them.
Are carob chips healthy for toddlers?
Carob chips are often sweetened and contain added fats, so they are a treat rather than a healthy food for toddlers. Plain carob powder gives the same flavor with no added sugar.
Can carob cause constipation in babies?
Carob is high in fiber and contains tannins, and large amounts may firm up stools in some babies. Small amounts of carob mixed into food, along with plenty of fruit, vegetables and water, are unlikely to cause problems.
