When can babies have saffron?
Can babies eat saffron?
Babies can have saffron from about 6 months in the tiny amounts used for cooking, like a few threads in rice or stew. Saffron is safe as a seasoning, but large amounts and saffron supplements are not for babies. Buy saffron from a trusted source, since cheap saffron is sometimes mixed with dyes or other fillers.
How to serve saffron by age
Shapes and textures change as your baby’s grasp and chewing grow.

6 months
Steep a few saffron threads in warm water and use the liquid to cook rice, lentils, chicken or vegetables, then blend or mash them until smooth. Offer it on a spoon.

7–8 months
Cook rice, lentils or vegetables in saffron water and serve them fork-mashed with soft lumps, or let your baby grab sticky clumps of soft rice. Soft saffron-cooked vegetables that squash easily between your fingers also work.

9–12 months
Offer saffron-flavored family foods like soft saffron rice, stews and paella made without any shellfish you have not introduced yet. Cut meat and vegetables into small, soft pieces.

12 months +
Toddlers can share saffron rice, risotto, biryani and stews. Keep using small amounts and skip saffron sweets that are high in sugar.
Why it’s good
Saffron is used in such small amounts that it adds color and flavor rather than nutrition. Saffron contains plant compounds called carotenoids, which give it its golden color. Its main value for babies is helping them enjoy new flavors.
Safety notes
- Use only cooking amounts, a pinch of threads for a whole family dish. Large doses of saffron can be harmful, so never give saffron supplements or extracts to children.
- Buy saffron from a trusted seller. Very cheap saffron or saffron powder may be mixed with dyes, turmeric, safflower or other fillers.
- Remove whole threads from your baby's portion if they bother your baby, though soft cooked threads are not a choking risk.
- Saffron rice dishes like paella and biryani can be salty and may contain shellfish or nuts. Set aside a low-salt portion and check ingredients.
- Saffron stains skin and clothes. A bib helps.
A low-allergy food, still worth watching
Saffron is not a common allergen, and reactions are rare. People with pollen allergies may rarely react, so watch for hives, swelling or vomiting the first time.
