When can babies have ground pork?
Can babies have ground pork?
Babies can have ground pork from about 6 months when it is cooked to 160F with no pink inside. Plain ground pork is a good source of iron, zinc and protein. Choose plain ground pork, not seasoned sausage meat, which is high in salt.
How to serve ground pork by age
Shapes and textures change as your baby’s grasp and chewing grow.

6 months
Cook plain ground pork until no pink remains, then blend it with a little cooking water, breast milk or formula into a smooth puree. Mix it with smooth vegetable puree like sweet potato or carrot and offer it on a spoon.

7–8 months
Stir moist, finely minced cooked pork into mashed sweet potato, rice porridge or a thick sauce for a lumpier texture. You can also make soft, finger-length patties or logs from plain ground pork with a little egg, breadcrumbs or grated apple, cooked through and tender enough to fall apart when pressed between your fingers.

9–12 months
Offer small pieces of soft pork meatballs or dumpling filling, or moist crumbles mixed into rice or noodles. Keep the meat juicy so it is easy to chew.

12 months +
Toddlers can enjoy ground pork in meatballs, lettuce wraps, fried rice, dumplings or pasta sauce. Use low-sodium soy sauce sparingly and flavor with ginger, garlic and herbs.
Why it’s good
Ground pork gives babies heme iron, zinc, protein, thiamin and vitamin B12. Pork is one of the richest food sources of thiamin, which helps the body turn food into energy. Iron and zinc from meat support brain development and immunity.
Safety notes
- Cook ground pork to an internal temperature of 160F (71C). Undercooked pork can carry Salmonella, Listeria and other bacteria.
- Choose plain ground pork, not sausage meat, chorizo or seasoned pork, which are high in sodium and may contain nitrites or spicy chili.
- Dry or overcooked crumbles are hard to chew. Bind the meat into soft shapes or mix it into moist foods.
- Wash hands, boards and utensils well after handling raw pork.
- Refrigerate cooked pork within 2 hours and use it within 3 to 4 days.
A low-allergy food, still worth watching
Ground pork is not a common food allergen. Rare reactions occur, including in some people with cat allergy (pork-cat syndrome) or alpha-gal syndrome, so offer a small amount first and watch for hives or vomiting.
