When can babies have bagels?
Can babies have bagels?
Babies can have wheat from 6 months, but bagels are best saved until about 9–12 months. At 6 months, wheat is best offered in smooth purees; from 7–8 months, offer soft bread strips that squash easily, then small pieces of toasted bagel with a soft spread from 9 months. Bagels contain wheat, a common allergen, and some contain sesame, egg or milk.
How to serve bagels by age
Shapes and textures change as your baby’s grasp and chewing grow.

6 months
At 6 months, babies are still eating smooth purees, so hold off on chewy bagel. To introduce wheat, stir iron-fortified wheat cereal into a puree, or soak a little plain bagel or soft bread in breast milk or formula and mash it smooth into a fruit or vegetable puree on a spoon.

7–8 months
Skip bagel for now, since even a toasted bagel is dense and chewy and a soft one turns gummy. Offer soft bread instead, such as lightly toasted soft whole-wheat bread cut into strips that squash easily, with a thin layer of mashed avocado, ricotta or thinned nut butter.

9–12 months
Offer toasted bagel cut into bite-sized squares, about the size of a chickpea to a small grape, with a soft spread. A mini bagel or bagel thin can be easier to manage than a full-size bagel.

12 months +
Toddlers can have half a toasted bagel cut into quarters or strips, with toppings like cream cheese, mashed egg or hummus. Keep teaching small bites and seated eating, and hold off on hard bagel chips until closer to 2 years.
Why it’s good
Bagels supply energy-giving carbohydrates, and enriched or whole-wheat bagels add iron, B vitamins and fiber. A whole-wheat bagel is the better pick for fiber and minerals. Bagels can be fairly high in sodium and are large, so a small piece is plenty for a baby.
Safety notes
- Untoasted bagel is dense and gummy and can form a sticky mass that is hard to swallow. Toast it well, cut it thin, and offer a drink of water during the meal.
- Avoid hard bagel chips and frozen whole bagels as teethers for young babies; pieces can break off. Bagel chips are best after about 2 years.
- Choose plain bagels. Everything, cinnamon-raisin and cheese bagels add sesame, extra salt, sugar or whole raisins.
- Check toppings: whole seeds, thick globs of nut butter and chunks of lox or deli meat are not suitable for babies.
- Always stay with your baby and keep them sitting upright while eating.
Introduce bagel on its own, then keep it in
Bagels contain wheat, one of the Top 9 allergens, and some varieties contain sesame, egg or milk. Introduce wheat in an easier form first if you can, and watch for hives, vomiting or swelling.
Bagels for babies: questions parents ask
Quick answers about bagels for babies and toddlers.
When can babies have bagels?
Babies can have wheat from 6 months in smooth purees, but bagels are best saved until about 9–12 months. Offer soft bread at 7–8 months, then toasted bagel cut into small pieces, since bagel is dense and chewy and can clump in the mouth.

Is a bagel a choking hazard for babies?

How do I serve a bagel to a 6 month old?
