When can babies have hamburgers?
Can babies have hamburgers?
Babies can have hamburger from about 6 months if the meat is cooked well done, to 160 F (71 C). Start with the cooked beef blended into a smooth puree, then offer soft patty strips or crumbles from about 7–8 months. Ground beef is one of the best sources of iron for babies. Skip added salt and serve the bun in soft strips separately.
How to serve hamburgers by age
Shapes and textures change as your baby’s grasp and chewing grow.

6 months
Cook unsalted ground beef until well done, to 160 F with no pink, then blend it with a little cooking water, breast milk or formula into a smooth puree. Mix it with smooth vegetable puree and offer it on a spoon.

7–8 months
Mince well-cooked ground beef into mashed potato or vegetables, or make a moist, unsalted patty (grated zucchini or a little egg helps), cook it to 160 F, and cut it into strips about the size of two adult fingers. Patties should be soft enough to break apart with gentle pressure.

9–12 months
Crumble or cut the patty into bite-size pieces about the size of a chickpea for pincer grasp practice. Offer a strip of soft bun or toast on the side.

12 months +
Toddlers can have a small burger cut into quarters or strips, with a soft bun and mild toppings like avocado, cheese or tomato. Restaurant burgers and fast food patties are salty, so keep them occasional.
Why it’s good
Hamburger made from ground beef gives babies heme iron, which the body absorbs easily, plus zinc, protein and vitamin B12. Babies need more iron from about 6 months as their stores run low, so beef is a valuable first food.
Safety notes
- Cook hamburger patties to an internal temperature of 160 F (71 C), with no pink in the middle. Ground beef can carry E. coli, and rare burgers are not safe for babies or toddlers.
- Dry, dense patties can be hard to chew and may clump. Keep them moist by mixing in grated vegetables, a little egg or breadcrumbs, and do not overcook.
- Leave out added salt. Seasoned patties, fast food burgers, ketchup, pickles and bacon add a lot of sodium.
- Thick buns can form a sticky ball in the mouth. Toast them lightly and cut into thin strips.
- Wash hands, boards and knives after handling raw ground meat.
A low-allergy food, still worth watching
Beef is not a common allergen, though a small number of children react to it, sometimes alongside cow's milk allergy. Burger buns, cheese and sauces can contain wheat, milk, egg, soy or sesame, so check what you add.
