Method

  1. 1

Peel the banana and break it into a bowl.

  2. 2

Mash with a fork until completely smooth, or blend for a few seconds for the silkiest texture.

  3. 3

Stir in breast milk or formula a teaspoon at a time until the purée drops easily off a spoon.

  4. 4

Serve straight away; banana browns quickly once mashed.

Serve it by age

6 months

Offer the smooth purée on a spoon, or stir it into iron-fortified baby cereal.

7–8 months

Mash with a fork so it has soft lumps, or offer a peeled banana spear with a little peel left on the bottom as a handle.

9–12 months

Cut ripe banana into small, soft pieces for pincer practice.

health_and_safetyAllergens

None of the top 9 allergens in the purée itself. The yogurt swap adds milk; offer it only after milk has been introduced on its own.

sync_altSwaps

  • swap_horizMash with half a ripe avocado for a creamier, higher-fat purée.
  • swap_horizStir into plain whole-milk yogurt (contains milk) from 6 months.

kitchenStorage

Best fresh. Leftover purée turns brown in the fridge; it is still safe for 1 day covered. Freezing changes the texture, so mash a fresh banana for each meal.

Safety reminders

  • No added salt, sugar or honey before 12 months.
  • At 6 months, blend until completely smooth with no lumps or skins; move on to thicker, lumpier textures over the next few weeks.
  • Stay with your baby and keep them seated upright while eating.
