When can babies have provolone?
Can babies have provolone?
Babies can have pasteurized provolone from 6 months, shredded and melted into warm food at first, with thin slices from 7–8 months. Provolone is a dairy allergen, and firm cubes or globs of melted cheese can be a choking risk, so serve it thin and in small amounts. Choose mild provolone, as aged and smoked types are saltier.
How to serve provolone by age
Shapes and textures change as your baby’s grasp and chewing grow.

6 months
Shred a little mild, pasteurized provolone and melt it into warm mashed vegetables, smooth lentils or oatmeal so it blends in completely. Offer it on a spoon, avoiding strings or globs of melted cheese.

7–8 months
Offer a thin slice of mild provolone cut into strips about the size of two adult fingers, or melt a little into scrambled eggs or onto a soft toast strip. Thin slices are easier to manage than cubes.

9–12 months
Tear thin provolone slices into small pieces for pincer-grasp practice, or shred it into pasta, quesadillas and baked vegetables. Let melted cheese cool so it is not stringy or hot.

12 months +
Toddlers can have provolone in sandwiches, on pizza or sliced thin with fruit and crackers. Continue avoiding cubes and large chunks until your child chews well.
Why it’s good
Provolone gives babies calcium, protein, phosphorus, vitamin B12 and fat for growing bones and energy. It has a mild, slightly tangy flavor that many babies enjoy. Provolone is moderately high in sodium, so keep portions small.
Safety notes
- Only serve provolone made with pasteurized milk. Raw milk cheeses can carry Listeria and other harmful bacteria.
- Avoid cubes and chunks of provolone, which are firm and can block the airway. Serve thin slices, shreds or small torn pieces.
- Melted provolone can form sticky globs. Mix it thinly into food or let it cool and firm a little before serving.
- Choose mild provolone (dolce) over aged or smoked provolone (piccante), which is saltier and stronger.
- Store provolone wrapped in the fridge and throw it out if it grows mold.
Introduce provolone on its own, then keep it in
Provolone is made from cow's milk, and dairy is one of the Top 9 allergens. Introduce a small amount and watch for hives, vomiting, swelling, coughing or wheezing, and once tolerated keep dairy in the diet regularly.
