Method

  1. 1

Heat the oven to 325°F (160°C) and line a tray with parchment.

  2. 2

Mash the banana until smooth, then mix in the oat flour and oil to make a soft dough. Add water if it crumbles.

  3. 3

Roll pieces of dough into sticks about the length and width of an adult finger, and flatten them slightly.

  4. 4

Bake 12–15 minutes, until just set and still soft when pressed. Do not let the edges brown or crisp.

  5. 5

Cool completely. Do the squash test before every serving, including after chilling or thawing: each stick must squash easily between your thumb and finger.

Safety reminders

  • No added salt, sugar or honey before 12 months.
  • Always check texture: food should squash between your thumb and finger.
  • Stay with your baby and keep them seated upright while eating.
  • These are soft-baked sticks, not hard rusks, and not a teether. Serve them as food, with your baby seated upright and an adult watching. Never offer them in a car seat, stroller or crib.
  • If a stick bakes hard, firms up in storage, or a firm chunk breaks off, do not serve it.
  • This recipe is general guidance for healthy, full-term babies and children. Ask your pediatrician first if your child was born early, has a medical condition, allergies or feeding difficulties (medical disclaimer).
